Jacob Anderson

Took Visual Imagination in 2024

Built his semester arc around Berlin and the rock-concert energy of the show. His final scenic design pitched a thrust stage with raised musician platforms, a flyable main drape, and a projection screen behind the band, aiming to recreate the feeling of a live rock concert.

Progression

Jacob's work across Visual Imagination, in syllabus order. Each project builds on the last.

  1. 01

    Lines project

    Week 4

Jacob Anderson · Lines project: four pen-only sketches in a 2×2 grid, each labeled (LA, Amsterdam, Berlin, the "now"), exploring direction and rhythm of line per section
  2. 02

    Color project

    Week 7

Jacob Anderson · Color project: digital expansion of the lines project with a color palette per section — yellow/blue washes for LA, oranges and purples for Amsterdam, fiery reds and oranges for Berlin, deep purple with cool gradients for the "now"
  3. 03

    Form & Texture project

    Week 10 (in-class)

Jacob Anderson · Form & Texture project: a 10×10 EVA foam base with cut-out V-shapes and I-shaped lines in black, mounted on rods at varying heights and planes, casting linear shadows on the surface

EVA foam V's and I-shapes spread across a 10×10 board at different sizes, planes, and heights, showing the spontaneity of Berlin and the riots. The foam itself is smooth yet porous: even things that seem rough, like Berlin, could be comfortable and smooth when one actually gets close, the same way Stu did.

  4. 04

    Painting with Light project

    Week 12 (in-class)

Jacob Anderson · Painting with Light: the Form & Texture model lit from the front with magenta and from behind with deep blue, throwing tall jagged shadows of the V-shapes onto the rear wall
  5. 05

    Sound project

    Week 14 (in-class)

    Background ambience
    Sound effect
  6. 06

    Final project

    Finals week

Jacob Anderson · Final scenic design: a colored stage layout sketch showing a thrust stage, audience seating wrapping around three sides, a main drape that can fly out behind the lighting bars, and a raised musician platform upstage
    • Jacob Anderson · Final project title slide reading "Scenic Design / Jacob Anderson" on a torn-paper graphic
      Title slide: Scenic Design.
    • Jacob Anderson · Stage Layout Process slide with two rough thrust-stage sketches side by side
Process: starting from a concert-stage feel, then arriving at a thrust.
    • Jacob Anderson · Closing slide reading "Passing Strange could look like this" with a final stage image
Closer: aiming to recreate the feeling of a live rock concert.

I really wanted something that felt like a concert stage to reflect the rock genre of the show. With the lights, thrust, effects, and music, I hope this production of Passing Strange can embrace and recreate that feeling of being in a live rock concert.
