A Raisin in the Sun
Lighting design for the 2024 production of A Raisin in the Sun at Theatrical Outfit, directed by Robert John Connor.
About the Lighting Design
A Raisin in the Sun was a study in naturalism. The play takes place in a single interior, a Chicago apartment, and the design’s whole job was to make the audience feel like they were inside it. Real light from real sources. Windows. Practical lamps. Sconces. The way sunlight moves across an apartment between morning and evening. The way moonlight comes through a window at night.
The kitchen window did the most work. There were three separate units lighting through it from outside, each at a different angle and color temperature. The high unit handled daytime, bright and overhead. The mid unit took over for the early evening sunset. The low unit picked up for later sunset, with the temperature warming and the angle dropping toward horizontal. The direction stayed the same. The window doesn’t move. Only the time of day did.
The window itself doubled as a texture source. At midday with the high unit lit, the cast shadow was steep, barely past the windowsill. At sunset with the low unit, the same window threw long shadows across the room. The audience could sense the time of day off the floor.
Fill light for face visibility went where it needed to without breaking the illusion. The audience buys naturalism as long as nothing visibly contradicts it. The art of this kind of design is in not getting caught.

About the Show
The story revolves around the Younger family, who reside in a cramped Chicago apartment. When they receive a significant insurance check following the death of the father, the family grapples with how to use the money to improve their lives. Lorraine Hansberry's classic is transformed into a soulful, inspiring musical as a proud Black family's quest for a better life explodes in song, dance and incisive human drama.
