Dancin' In The Street

Dancin’ In The Street is a brand new musical co-written by Scott Daniel and Katie Berger Wood, set over the course of two days on a realistic street scene. The lighting design navigated the constraint of a locked repertory plot (fixed trim heights, masking, and fixture placements) by repurposing the existing inventory creatively.

The design balanced two worlds: a grounded, naturalistic street environment and the heightened reality of the songs. Throughout the two days, lighting established time of day and location through practical sources and directional light. When characters began to sing, the design introduced a subtle bridge into the song world: slight color shifts that gradually intensified as the songs progressed into full saturation and fantasy.

The result was a design that worked within significant constraints while serving both the emotional arc of the songs and the literal passage of time that structured the show’s story. Every limitation of the repertory plot became an opportunity to solve problems creatively, rather than a reason to simplify the design.
