And Then They Came For Me

freeFall Theatre freeFall Studio Theatre St. Petersburg, FL

Lighting design for the 2026 production of And Then They Came For Me at freeFall Theatre, directed by Eric Davis.

About the Lighting Design

The entire lighting design centered on isolation. Precisely executed shutter cuts created tight pools of light around individual characters and small groups, mirroring the emotional and physical isolation at the heart of the play. The shutter work was dynamic; cuts would shift and breathe with the performers as their isolation deepened. The backbone of the design was the ETC Lonestar, graciously provided by ETC as demo units for the theatre.

The color palette stayed stark and cold from the first cue to the last. Warmth and color appeared only in moments of hope, primarily when Anne Frank was on stage or speaking about the future. The warmth wasn’t decoration. It was the only place where hope was allowed to show.

Every cue was either reinforcing isolation or breaking it.

About the Show

And Then They Came for Me is a multimedia play that weaves videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. Ed was Anne Frank's first boyfriend and she wrote about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary. Eva Schloss was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam, and her family went into hiding the same day as the Frank family.
