About the Lighting Design
Mamma Mia at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre was City Springs’ first show back after COVID, and one of the first equity productions approved to perform after the pandemic shutdown. The venue was outdoor instead of their usual indoor stage. The schedule was tight. The design had to load in fast and run reliably.
The rig was primarily all moving lights. With no time for a traditional focus call, the rig had to deliver every angle, color, and beam quality the show needed from positions that didn’t require touching them once they were hung. The whole show was time-coded.
The conceptual angle was: theatrical set, lit as if it were an outdoor concert. The cast, the choreography, and the story were all musical theater. The rig and how it ran came out of the concert world. Most of the time the design read like a polished concert. In the quieter storytelling moments, it stepped back and let the show breathe like theater. The push and pull between the two worlds was the whole design.
