White Christmas
City Springs Theatre Company Byers Theatre Sandy Springs, GA
Lighting design for the 2023 production of White Christmas at City Springs Theatre Company, directed by Sara Edwards.
About the Lighting Design
White Christmas was a naturalism show. The set, by Anna Louizos, gave the design a series of real-world locations to play in: a radio station, a hotel, a train car, the inn. The lighting leaned into those locations, with practical sources integrated throughout doing most of the world-building. Lamps. Sconces. Window light. The audience read each scene by where the light was coming from, not by where the rig was pointed.
Holiday colors ran underneath everything. Warm tones, warm practicals, the kind of saturation that signals comfort without going neon.
When characters sang, the design bent the rules a little. People don’t burst into song in everyday life, so when it happens, the lighting gives itself permission to break naturalism a bit. Color saturates. Beams shift in ways that wouldn’t happen in a hotel lobby at 9pm. The big dance numbers broke harder, into full musical-theater territory: saturated color, dynamic shifts, the rig owning the space rather than supporting it. Then the number ended and the design came back to reality.
This was during my dual run as Resident Lighting Designer and Director of Production at City Springs.

About the Show
Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil's former army commander. Bob arranges for his old friend Ralph Sheldrake to bring the General's former troops up to Vermont to support the show, but confusion ensues when Betty overhears Bob's plans and misinterprets his intentions.
