About the Show
The Pearl Fishers is an opera in three acts by the composer Georges Bizet, first performed in 1863. The story is set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and describes a moving tale of friendship tested by love. Two former friends, Zurga and Nadir, reunite as the pearl fishers prepare to choose a new chief. A priestess chosen to bless the fishing season arrives veiled, but Nadir recognizes her as Leïla, the mysterious woman he loved years before. When their secret affair is discovered, they are condemned to death, but Zurga's act of mercy allows them to escape together.
