South Pacific

City Springs Theatre Company Byers Theatre Sandy Springs, GA

Lighting design for the 2019 production of South Pacific at City Springs Theatre Company, directed by Baayork Lee.

About the Lighting Design

South Pacific was a design that was rooted in naturalism. The design’s job was to make the audience feel like they were on the island. Heat, humidity, palm leaves, the way the tropical sun moves across the day. Realism for the location, scene by scene, from the first sunrise to the last sunset.

Directed by Baayork Lee, my first of several collaborations with her, the show leaned theatrical only in specific moments: solos, romantic isolation work, the more reflective stretches where the design got to find a single character in a single shaft of light and let everything else fall away. Beautiful stage pictures were the constant. Theatrical moves were the punctuation.

About the Show

On a South Pacific island during World War II, Ensign Nellie Forbush, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with French planter Emile de Becque. When Nellie learns that the mother of Emile's children was an island native, she refuses Emile's proposal of marriage, unable to overcome the prejudices with which she was raised. When Emile accompanies Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie chooses to embrace a future with Emile and his children, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
