Jesus Christ Superstar
Manatee Performing Arts Center Stone Hall Bradenton, FL
Lighting design for the 2015 production of Jesus Christ Superstar at Manatee Performing Arts Center, directed by Norm Small.
About the Lighting Design
Jesus Christ Superstar is a quintessential rock musical, and the design followed the music. Bold, saturated colors throughout, cut through with cold white arc light at specific moments. That contrast, saturated palette cut by hard white arc, is a design language that is ever-present in my work, though now the cold white usually comes from LEDs rather than literal arc fixtures.
The music drove all the cueing choices. Each beat, each chord change, each blocking move got its own decision about color, intensity, and timing. Lighting followed both the performers and the score.

About the Show
A timeless rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice based on the last week of Jesus' life. Loosely based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion, the work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centered on Judas, who is dissatisfied with how Jesus steers his disciples. The story, told entirely through song, explores personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.
