In The Heights (In The Park)
American Stage in the Park Demen's Landing Park St. Petersburg, FL
Lighting design for the 2015 production of In The Heights (In The Park) at American Stage in the Park, directed by Karla Hartley.
About the Lighting Design
In The Heights at American Stage in the Park was the first park show in years that wasn’t built into the same standard set configuration. Scenic designer Steve Mitchell and I pushed for a custom build, and the producers agreed. The result was a show designed specifically for In The Heights rather than fitted into a generic rig. That choice opened the door for everything that followed in the park, all of which got full designs from there on.
The rig had a few moving lights this time, housed in waterproof domes that limited what they could do. The strategy was to go all out with what we had. The movers handled isolation and a handful of dramatic moments. Follow spots covered the rest of the isolation work. The LED conventionals carried the saturated-color, big-musical-theater visual energy that In The Heights demands.
The Park rig was finally in a position to meet what a show like In The Heights asks for.

About the Show
Set in Washington Heights, New York City, the musical centers on Usnavi, a first-generation Dominican-American bodega owner, and his friends and family dealing with the pressures of rising rents and closing neighborhood businesses. While one family figures out how to pay for an Ivy League tuition, a young woman tries to put a down payment on a new apartment, and Usnavi himself attempts to reconnect with his roots in the Dominican Republic after his parents' deaths.
