Hairspray

City Springs Theatre Company Byers Theatre Sandy Springs, GA

Lighting design for the 2019 production of Hairspray at City Springs Theatre Company, directed by Brandt Blocker.

About the Lighting Design

Hairspray at City Springs was the first Hairspray I was able to light using an all-LED-and-movers rig. After years of working with mixed conventional/LED inventories, the rig now had limitless color, infinite preset combinations, and the ability to react on the beat. Which also can be a challenge.

A limitless rig is overwhelming. The interesting design problem isn’t whether the rig CAN do something. It’s whether the moment needs it.

That became the central guideline: the music dictates the rig. Which moments are receding and calm. Which ones are big, flashy, over the top. The full capacity of the rig serves the song’s energy rather than getting deployed indiscriminately. When a song is quiet, the design is quiet. When a song wants the room to break open, the rig opens up.

Restraint is what makes the big moments land.

About the Show

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows Tracy Turnblad, a pleasantly plump teenager who dreams of dancing on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, she's transformed from social outcast to sudden star and uses her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this family-friendly musical is piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.
