Fiddler on the Roof

freeFall Theatre freeFall Studio Theatre St. Petersburg, FL

Lighting design for the 2013 production of Fiddler on the Roof at freeFall Theatre, directed by Eric Davis.

About the Lighting Design

The 2013 freeFall production had musicians on stage throughout, a big open playing space, and an inventory limited by what freeFall had at the time (this was before a technology refresh that came later). The lighting carried time of day, emotion, and season across the show, with the color arc moving warm-to-cold across the families’ displacement. The 2023 City Springs production used the same color arc on a much bigger rig with much more headroom. The story is the same; the space and the gear shifted around it.

About the Show

Set in Imperial Russia, this musical centers on Tevye, a milkman in the fictional village of Anatevka, who attempts to maintain Jewish traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family's lives. He must cope with his three older daughters' wishes to marry for love, choices that are increasingly challenging for Tevye, while an edict of the tsar eventually evicts the Jews from their village.
