Beauty & The Beast
City Springs Theatre Co. Byers Theatre Sandy Springs, GA
Lighting design for the 2024 production of Beauty & The Beast at City Springs Theatre Co..
About the Lighting Design
Beauty and the Beast is, well, a tale as old as time. The design’s primary goal was simple: send kids (and their adults) walking out of the theater with a sense of theatrical magic, whether they were discovering it for the first time or finding it again.
The design framework was heightened-realism throughout the show. The story takes place in real locations (a village, a castle, a forest), but fantasy permeates every scene. Village moments stayed grounded in naturalism: time of day, weather, the interior and exterior cues you’d expect. The castle dwellers, on the other hand, lived in colors and more saturated palettes, so the magic that surrounded them was readable from across the theater. The shift between the two worlds was not abrupt. It was a difference in saturation, in temperature, in the way light played across faces and across the floor.
The set’s central element was a large automated rotating castle unit. Different sides and configurations represented the throne room, corridors, and interior chambers. The lighting had to track the rotation to keep the actors lit through every reveal.

About the Show
The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. The stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice.
